I firmly believe that we shouldn't reserve innovation mindsets for products and services alone. We can apply those transformative mindsets to our own personal goals and challenges.
EXPERIENCE
For the majority of my career, I’ve been devoted to solving design challenges for clients in a variety of roles and contexts. I’m still doing that. Most recently, as a director at the strategic design consulting firms Cooper and then Designit, I worked to lead human-centered design projects, develop practice capabilities, mentor practitioners, teach courses and manage client relationships. Before that, I worked in a variety of environments (health marketing, affordable art, urban mobility) and ran my own small design business for 15 years.
For the past three years, as a dedicated member of the Cooper Professional Education team at Designit, I’ve harnessed practitioner knowledge to design programs that empower clients and design practitioners to solve their own challenges through project coaching and training. I’ve supported global teams like United Technologies with innovation coaching, in addition to crafting and facilitating a suite of experiential courses on human-centered design methods (e.g. service design, UX, facilitation, research and leadership). Some recent curriculum authorship includes a course to empower executives to support their teams in applying human-centered design mindsets and a live remote course on Facilitating Remote Workshops in May of 2020.
In service of my own goal to more broadly support clients in theirs, I began the road to leadership coaching. In February 2020, I completed my coach training at the Co-Active Training Institute, the largest and most rigorous coach training and certification organization, and am currently finishing my required coaching hours for the Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) designation from CTI.
WHY ME
Hey, I coach because I’ve personally experienced (and continue to experience) the benefits of coaching. I’ve been coached when I felt stuck professionally and creatively adrift; I’ve also sought out coaching at the height of my career in craving new inspiration and challenge. Coaching in these moments can be transformative. It’s only worth it if you’re getting something out of it—forward progression, growth, and achievement of goals. This is what I care about. You should care about that too. Which gets to the more interesting question… Why you?

Facilitation + Design Coaching
Julia Cowing | Sr. User Experience Research, Mailchimp
Shannon is one of the best workshop coaches I've had. Her energy, humor, and knowledge made the workshop engaging and memorable. It was a joy to learn as much as I could from her. She's just so much fun as well as being smart and personable.
For the past few years, I’ve been a student, observer and co-facilitator of Shannon’s in DesignIt’s public and private design course offerings, from Design Leadership to Service Design to Facilitating Design. She is dedicated to creating the best learning outcomes for all of her participants - no matter their level - and can re-construct a curriculum on-the-fly to make sure everyone leaves having moved their practical knowledge forward. She has boundless energy as a facilitator and develops curricula that are thought-provoking and applicable. As an avid learner, she is constantly evolving and growing her skills and as a result, ours too.

I've worked with Shannon on multiple projects over the past four years, always with excellent results. She's fabulous to work with, continually focusing on understanding the real needs of her clients and their customers, and translating those needs into very well-designed solutions.
Customers have complimented our organization on how well we listened to their needs; those results were driven by Shannon, her skills, and her team. I would look for any opportunity to work with her again
Shannon was my manager for two years at Designit. She is someone I always felt I could speak with candidly and she always worked with me to find the right solutions to any challenges. As a manager, she truly cares about understanding both your career objectives and you as a person, in order to guide your career path and growth in your field. With that knowledge she champions you and advocates on your behalf and always looks for the right opportunities to support your goals.
